  • The Curse of my Voice

I knew I shouldn't pick up my house phone. Everyone in my household has their own cell phones so if the house phone rings, there's a very high chance it's either some telemarketers or some long lost family member asking for money .

So for some odd reason, I picked it up today... thought they would tell me I won the lottery (not that I gamble).
But here's how the conversation usually goes...

    Me: "Hello"
Chinese Telemarketer (CT): "Hi, I am calling from blahblah company and I would like to do a survey" (in Chinese)
    Me: "Sorry, I'm not interested"
CT: "Oh, you speak no Chinese? Do you have adults in the house? Is your mommy or daddy home?" (Broken English)
Me: "No, you can talk to me and can you please speak English?"
CT: "I'm sorry, we really need to talk to an older person who's 18 and over. Maybe we'll call again ok little girl?"

So, I got insulted and insisted that I am an adult who can speak Chinese but then I got suckered into doing the survey which they promised would take 5 minutes which turned out to be 45 min long. Dang it, what a waste of my time. Those telemarketers sure know how to do business.

    So my solution next time?
    1. Don't pick up the phone or
    2. Pretend to be a little girl and mess with their minds! HA!

I'm telling you, it's the Asian genes. I get treated like a little girl a lot (either when I'm working or traveling) and I attempt to talk with a very low and deep voice. Doesn't work.

    But seriously, any suggestions?
